In October 2022, we launched our Verge Garden Project in collaboration with the Shady Lanes Project as part of the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Save Our Big Backyard campaign at Kumbartcho Nursery at Eatons Hill.
This is a flexible and doable group activity that raises community awareness and knowledge about the importance of biodiversity and native habitat in our suburbs as well advocate to protect regional and remote areas.

How to get involved
We encourage all members to convert their grass verge to a native verge garden to increase biodiversity and help street trees grown for shade. The verge is the area in front of your home between the front property line and the kerb that you usually mow.
To find out more about the logistics of verge gardening, please look at the free course, Verge Garden Basics – Understanding the Space is about understanding the complexities of gardening on our streets and an introduction to planting as advocacy and collaboration.
We also hold in-person events on the topic in conjunction with the Banyo District Verge Garden group and others.
Listing your gardens on the Shady Lanes Project website provides inspiration and reassurance for others, and opportunities to connect to a wider network.
When you list, please tick the box for
- ACF Brisbane Northside to say you are part of this project so you will be included in our list.
- The box for general Nature Strip projects so you’ll be included in all verge garden listings.
- If you are part of one of the other groups, you can tick them as well.
All planting needs to be in accordance with your Council Verge Garden Guidelines. See the guidelines for Brisbane City Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council. Every council’s policy and guidelines are different.
